My grandparents are not able to fast so they want to pay Fidya

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

As we are well aware of, the holy month of Ramadan is in process. But due to old age, my grandparents are not able to fast so they want to pay Fidya. Can you tell me how much in rupees they will both have to pay as Fidya? How much Fidya is compulsory upon them to pay? Kindly guide as soon as possible.

If the questioner’s grandparents are not able to fast due to any ailment or because of old age, and it is not expected that they will become healthy in future, then they can give Fidya for fasting. The Fidya for fasting is that every day, in place of the fast, they must give the amount of Sadaqatul-Fitr (i.e. half of a صاع, approx. 2kg) or its value to anyone is deserving of Zakat.
And Allah knows best.
