A query regarding reciting ‘Subhanallahil ‘Azimi Wa Bi Hamdihi’ after Salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

What is the reference for this narration?

Whoever recites this du’a ‘Subhanallahil ‘Azimi Wa Bi Hamdihi’ after every Salah, one hundred thousand [100 000] of his sins will be forgiven and twenty four thousand [24 000] sins of his parents will be forgiven. (Ibnus Sunni)

Answer

I have not come across these words in Ibnus Sunni.

The narration as appears in ‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah of Imam Ibnus Sunni is as follows:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whomsoever recites the following after Jumu’ah, Allah will forgive one thousand (1000) of his sins and twenty four thousand (24000) sins of his parents:

سبحان الله العظیم و بحمدہ

Subhanallahil ‘Azimi wa bi hamdihi

(‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah, Hadith: 377)

Notes:

1) The narration in Ibnus Sunni does not mention ‘after every Salah’, rather after Jumu’ah Salah.

2) In the published edition of Ibnus Sunni, the narration states that one thousand of his sins will be forgiven. In non primary sources, the authors have referenced this narration to Ibnus Sunni and Daylami and have cited the narration with the words ‘one hundred thousand’ instead of one thousand. (Refer: Al Ajwibatul Mardiyyah, vol. 1 pg. 290, Kanzul ‘Ummal, Hadith: 21321 and Ithafus Sadah Al Muttaqin, vol. 5 pg. 13-14)

Update: The manuscript of Ibnus Sunni (42/a- Darul Kutubil Misriyyah) does indeed have the words: ‘one hundred thousand’ as cited in the secondary sources mentioned above.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

This supports the fact that wordings in some manuscripts do sometimes differ from the published editions of books, as I have occasionally pointed out. See some examples here and here.

In this case, this particular manuscript is supported by what was quoted by the authors of the secondary sources cited above…
