Prostration of forgetfulness and blessings on Prophet during Qunut

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Karim Yahya, SunniPath Academy Teacher

In the Fajr prayer my imam performs qunut without saying the salams on the Prophet (Allah bless and grant him peace) and his family and companions.

Should one then make the prostration of forgetfulness if the imam only does a partial qunut?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Qunut is a main sunna of the prayer and sending blessings and peace on the Prophet (Allah bless and grant him peace) and his folk and companions after the qunut is another independent main sunna. So it is sunna to prostrate for forgetfulness if one’s imam does not send blessings and peace to them. However if this would cause disunity, it is probably better avoided. And Allah knows best and He alone gives success (tawfiq).
