What is the meaning of يؤذيني ابن آدم in the following Hadith?
يؤذيني ابن آدم يسب الدهر وأنا الدهر، بيدي الأمر أقلب الليل والنهار
Answer
This Hadith is regarding swearing/cursing time and is recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 4826, 7491 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2246)
The literal translation is ‘The son of Adam causes me harm.’ However, it is not possible to harm Allah. The commentators have therefore explained that the figurative meaning is intended in this Hadith: i.e. [By swearing/cursing time], “The son of Adam has uttered such words, that draw the wrath of Allah.”
