Question

Kindly provide the source and translation of the following du’a:

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this du’a on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Translation

‘O Allah! Of all the things that are remembered, You are the most rightful to be remembered! And of all the things that are worshipped, You are the most worthy of being worshiped! [You are] The most helpful of those who’s aid is sought [of all the agencies from whom help is asked for, You are the most helpful]! The most compassionate of those that rule! The most generous of those that are asked! The most plentiful of those that give! You are the King, having no partner! The Unique/Matchless; You will never perish! Everything will perish besides Your countenance! You are never obeyed but with your permission [i.e. only those that You guide and grant the ability to obey You, will obey], nor are You ever disobeyed except that it is within Your knowledge [i.e. You are all aware]! O Rabb of the universe! When You are obeyed You [are pleased and] express gratitude, and when You are disobeyed You forgive! [You are] the closest witness [the closest of all things present], the nearest guardian! You have intervened between the chests [i.e. between the soul and its desires] and seized by the forelocks! You have recorded the incidents [and actions of all things] and written the life spans! [The matter of] all hearts rests with you [i.e. You know what is in the hearts, and they are all in your control]! Secrets are all open/disclosed before You [i.e. Nothing is hidden from You]. [Only] that which You have made permissible is permissible. And [only] that which You have forbidden is forbidden. The din [i.e. true and only religion] is that which You have legislated! All matters are as You have decreed! The creation is Your creation, and the servants are Your servants! You are Allah the Ever Compassionate, The Very Merciful! I ask You by the effulgence [nur] of Your countenance with which the Heavens and Earth are illuminated, in the name of every right which is Yours, and by the right the beggars have over You [i.e. the right which You have allowed unto them], that You accept me this morning or evening, and grant me refuge from the fire [of Jahannam] by Your Power!

Note: This du’a has appeared in Mulla ‘Ali Qari’s (rahimahullah) kitab (book), Al-Hizbul A’adham, (a secondary source) with a very slight variation in wording. I have reworded it in the query as it appears in the primary sources quoted above, with these variations underlined in bold. Although it would be better to recite what is recorded before us in the primary source, one can still recite what has appeared in the secondary source. It is very probable that the primary source Mulla ‘Ali Qari (rahimahullah) was quoting from contained the wording as he himself recorded it.
