Fasting whilst on journey

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Can you please verify and explain the following Hadith:

 قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صلى الله عليه وسلم -: “‏لَيْسَ مِنَ الْبِرِّ الصِّيَامُ فِي السَّفَرِ”‏

Answer

This Hadith has been reported by several Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum), among them are the following:

1. Sayyiduna Jabir (radiyallahu’anhu) in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1946 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2607.

2. Sayyiduna Abu Malik; Ka’b ibn ‘Asim (radiyallahu’anhu) in Sunan Nasai, Hadith: 2255 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1664.

3. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhuma) in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1665.

Translation

Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘Fasting while on journey is not [a sign of] piety.’

Explanation

This Hadith is addressing those who, despite being physically unable to fast while on journey in Ramadan, they insist on fasting.

In such a situation, one is advised to accept the relaxation of the rule, by not fasting on journey and doing qada (making up for it) later.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
