Explanation of ‘Spending some time in the morning in Allah’s path…’

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I heard an ‘Alim explain that:

“Spending some time in the morning or evening in path of Allah is better than the world and whatever it contains…”

Does not refer to being better than the things of the world because the world has no value in the sight of Allah, rather it refers to being better than all the good deeds taking place at that time in the world. The reason is that through spending time in the path of Allah, all other good actions come into existence.

Is this explanation correct?

Answer

There are several legitimate explanations for this Hadith.

One of them is that the reward for being in the path of Allah for a short moment is better than one acquiring the entire wealth of the world and spending it in charity.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 2794, ‘UmdatulQari, Hadith: 2794 and Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 7286)

I haven’t seen the explanation cited in your query in the commentaries of Hadith that I have referred to. However, this explanation is supported by the Hadith below:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that a man asked Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam): ‘Show me a deed that is equal to striving in Allah’s way.’

Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) replied: ‘I cannot find any such deed.’

Thereafter Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) asked: ‘Are you able to engage in Salah and fasting, continuously [i.e, for the entire duration that a Mujahid is out]?’

The man replied: ‘I cannot do so.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2785)

In one similar narration of Tabarani cited by Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah), Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) mentioned that in the event that someone is able to engage in such continuous worship, then too he would not reach even one tenth of the reward of the one out in Allah’s way.’

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 2785)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
