Is this narration authentic?
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) once consulted Abu Bakr and ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) regarding a certain matter. They were unable to give a suitable suggestion. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then sent for Mu’awiyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) saying: ‘Consult Mu’awiyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in your affairs since he is trustworthy and reliable.’
Answer
Imam Bazzar and Imam Tabarani (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Busr with slight variation in the wording.
(Musnad Bazzar, Hadith: 3507 and Musnadush Shamiyyin, Hadith: 1110)
However, Hafiz Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the [text of this] Hadith very weak (munkar).
(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 9 pg. 356)
Although this particular virtue is unauthentic, this does not decrease Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu)’s status and virtue which has been proven in other narrations.
