What is the authenticity of the du’a quoted in Al-Hizbul-A’zam: “I seek refuge from the time when the hearts will be like that of non-Arabs (Ajam) and tongues will be of those of Arabs”?
Kindly explain the meaning of the du’a as well.
Answer
The above mentioned du’a is recorded in Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 22777). Hafiz Al-‘Iraqi has mentioned that this narration is weak. (Faydul-Qadir vol.2 pg.188)
Note: This does not mean that one cannot recite this du’a as weak narrations are acceptable in issues of virtue as well as du’as. (Tadribur-Rawi pg.196 -Darul-Fikr- and Mustadrak Al-Hakim, beginning of the chapter on du’as)
As for its meaning, ‘Allamah al-Munawi (rahimahullah) has written that the meaning of the statement, “Their hearts will be the like of non-Arabs” is: They will bear the qualities that were more prevalent among the non-Arabs in the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) most of whom were non believers, i.e. they will have hypocrisy and pride.
And the meaning of “And their tongues will be of Arabs” is that they will be sweet tongued, very eloquent and sly. They will also be very convincing. (Faydul-Qadir vol.2 pg.188)
