During a lecture, I heard this story: A Sahabi (radiyallahu’anhu) asked his wife for something to eat. She said that there was nothing in the home to eat. He went to the masjid, prayed two rak’ahs, came back but still there was nothing
He realised that there was something wrong with his salah. So he went back to the masjid, prayed two more rak’ahs returned home and asked his wife again. He found that the wheat grinder (chakki) he had in his house started operating by itself and was churning out flour that filled up every container in the house.
Is this a true story? What is its source and chain of narrators? What was the name of the Sahabi?
Answer
A similar narration has been recorded by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (Hadith 10606), Imam Bazzar in his Musnad (Majma’uz-Zawa’id vol.10 pg.257), Imam al-Bayhaqi in Dala’il al-Nubuwwah (Bidaya wal-Nihayah vol.4 pg.119), and Imam al-Tabrani in al-Mu’jam al-Awsat (hadith 5588). Also refer to Hayatus Sahabah vol.3 pg.642 – 642
In all of these narrations there is no mention of that Sahabi performing any salah.
In fact, it is mentioned that the wife of that Sahabi (radiyallahu’anhuma) turned to Allah Ta’ala and asked from Him instead of asking from the creation and in this way Allah Ta’ala sustained them.
Hafiz Haythami (rahimahullah) has regarded all the narrators of the narration of Musnad Ahmad as reliable. (Majma’uz-Zawa’id vol.10 pg.257)
I was unable to locate the name of the Sahabi (radiyallahu’anhu)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best,
