Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would become happy with a good name

Could you mention the reference of this Hadith?

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded these words with a suitable chain.

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 4701, Al Mu’jamul Kabir; Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 8 pg. 47)

Imam Abu Dawud and Imam Ahmad (rahimahumallah) have recorded slightly different words. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has declared the chain in Abu Dawud sound (hasan).

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 3915, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 347-348, Fathul Bari, Hadith: 5756, vol. 10 pg. 215. Also see: Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 5827)

Translation

When Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) questioned someone regarding their name and the name was a good name, the [happiness] would be visible on Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) face. If the name was not [a good name] he would dislike it. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would go to a town he would enquire regarding its name. If the name was good, he would become happy and if it [was not good] the [displeasure] would be seen on his face.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
