‘If his heart was devoted, his limbs would have been still’ (in salah)

What is the status of the Hadith wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saw a man playing with his beard in Salah. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘If his heart was devoted, his limbs would also have been devoted?’

Answer

This should not be quoted as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam).

(Refer: Lisanul Mizan, vol. 4 pg. 163, Nawadirul Usul, Hadith: 820, and Al Mughir)

Correctly attributed to Sa’id ibn Al Musayyab (rahimahullah)

Imam Abdur Razzaq, Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Imam Muhammad ibn Nasr Al Marwazi (rahimahumullah) and others have recorded this as the statement of the great Tabi’i, Sa’id ibn Al Musayyab (rahimahullah) through a very weak chain.

‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has also stated that this is more commonly attributed to S’aid ibn Al Musayyab (rahimahullah).

(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 3308, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 6854, Ta’zimu Qadris Salah, Hadith: 151. Refer: Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 401)

Note:

1) Some versions state that Sa’id ibn Al Musayyab saw a man playing with stones in Salah. He then uttered the statement in question.

(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 3309)

2) Imam Muhammad ibn Nasr Al Marwazi (rahimahullah) has also recorded this statement, attributed to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah ibn Al Yaman (radiyallahu ‘anhu), through a weak chain.

(Ta’zimu Qadris Salah, Hadith: 150)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
