Question:

There is a hadith that says Muhammad cursed women and men who imitate each other by wearing the opposite gender’s clothes. Is it haram for me, a Muslim girl to wear men’s apparel for the sake modesty as men’s clothes are baggy?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There are two aspects of your question.

  1. Women imitating men
  2. Woman wearing men clothes.

If the women are imitating men or vice versa then it is prohibited. It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah cursed men who copy women and cursed women who copy men. (Sahih Bukhari)

Secondly, women wearing men clothes; if such clothes are purely for men like thob (jubba) then it will be prohibited as it comes under the rule of imitating men. But if the clothes are unisex which means it is worn by both genders, then it will be permissible.

As for as loose clothes are concerned, you can also wear abayas and women clothes that are lose and modest.

Only Allah knows best.
