Raise hands after Azan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Raise hands after Azan

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

There are two types of duas.  Firstly, those duas where the words have been narrated specifically for that occasion and secondly, those duas where the words are not specific for that occasion.

Examples of the first type of duas are duas after Azan, going to the toilet, at the time of sexual intercourse, eating etc.  Examples of the second type is duas after farz prayers or for repenting.

With regards to the first type of dua, one should not lift the hands, i.e. one would not lift his hands after hearing the azan.

For duas of the second category, one’s hands can be raised.  (Ahsanul Fatawa p.298 v.2)
