Assalamu Alaykum respected and honorable Mufti Saheb,
Why is it that in the Quran the word ‘kathalika’ comes sometimes as kathaliki (كذلكِ and كذلكَ )? For example, Surah Aal Imraan verses 40 and 47. I am simply asking as I want to know what rule is being applied here.

Answer:
The ك can come as كَ or كِ when we have the word كَذٰلِك because it is for خِطَاب (speech).
When it appears with a fatha, it is because it is addressing the masculine. Hence, in ayah 40 of Surah Ale-Imran we see that Allah (SWT) is addressing Zakariyyah (as).
When it appears with a kasra, it is because it is addressing the feminine. Hence, in ayah 47 of Surah Ale-Imran Allah (SWT) is addressing Maryam (as).
