Beginning and finishing the food with salt

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Respected Mufti sahib,
I have a question regarding beginning and ending a meal with salt or salty food.
Is it true that we end a meal with whichever we started with i.e. if we have something sweet to start off with then we should end with it as well and if we start with salty food then we should end with salty food?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

It is desirable to start and finish one’s food with salt. This is what our jurists have mentioned in their respective books. (Bahrur Raaiq p.209 v.8, Fatawa Hindiyyah p.337 v.5, Imdadul Fatawa p.112 v.4 & Fatawa Mahmoodiyah p.70 v.18)

There is no basis of finishing the meal with what you started with.
