Kinesiology

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

What is the Shar’ee status of Kineseology? Mere Google searches on the topic appear to be misleading. The science itself seems to be very sinister, similar to “Body Talk”, but NOT the same.

Answer:

Many alternate modalities are being practiced nowadays and are rapidly gaining acceptance amongst our people as these methods appear to work very efficiently. The problem, however, is that many of these practices have un-Islamic sources which have been garbed under scientific jargon and “spiritual” flavour and have even been given fancy Islamic terms.

Kinesiology is not a mere alternate or energy modality, rather it includes psychological and chiropractic teachings as well. We have, however, observed that it entails certain elements and practices which do not conform to our Aqeedah (doctrinal beliefs).

Some of these elements such as Emanation , Touch to heal, Mudras and balancing of the Chakras  seek to attack one of the most fundamental and rather sensitive tenets of Islam i.e. Imaan Bil Ghayb-Belief in the unseen.

In spite of the fact that the practitioner and more so the client may not adhere to or uphold these beliefs which are fundamental in the study of this modality, the fact of the matter is that these ideas and precepts are grey areas which Islam strives to protect us from, as these beliefs are linked to those of Shirk. They are such concepts into which a person can fall unwillingly. Similarly, there are certain hand and body gestures which one would normally associate with sorcerers, fortune tellers and the like.

Allah ﷻ commands us in the Quran;

And do not incline towards (do not associate
with and do not imitate) those who do wrong lest the Fire touch you. For then
you would have none to protect you against (the punishment of) Allah and you
will not be helped. (Hud-113)

At another place Allah mentions;

Those who have Imaan and do not mix their Imaan with wrongdoing (all types of  shirk) only such people will have safety and only they will be rightly guided. (Al An’aam-82)

In a Hadeeth it says;

عن ابنِ عُمَرَ، قال: قال رسولُ الله ﷺ، مَن تَشَبَّه بقومٍ فهو منهم
(رواه أبو داؤد)

“Whoever imitates a nation then he is from among them”

Even though kinesiology might be adopted for a valid medicinal or emotional purpose, one would be advised to rather utilize the various other permissible methods available which do not entail such practices and beliefs.
