Performing Ṣalaah With Gloves For Males And Females And With A Mask

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

Can you please confirm if it is permssible to pray with gloves on for a man or a woman.

Also can Mufti Saheb please confirm whether it is wrong to pray with the palms covered.

Finally can Mufti Saheb please tell me if it is permissible to perform salaah with a mask on in normal circumstances and in the current climate.

Answer:

It is fundamentally permissible for men to wear gloves whilst performing Ṣalāh. However, males should refrain from wearing them if there is no real need such as cold weather, etc. As far as women are concerned, it is preferable for them to cover their palms (whether it is with gloves or long sleeves, etc) as there is more modesty and more caution in doing so. However, if a woman performs her Ṣalāh without covering her palms, then too the Ṣalāh will be valid with any reprehension.

With regard to performing Ṣalāh wearing a mask, due to the Ḥadīth mentioned hereunder, we are of the view that it will Makrūh to perform Ṣalāh with the face covered, under normal situations as well as in the current climate.

Hadhrat Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāḥ ʿAnhu) narrates that Rasūlullāh forbade trailing garments during Ṣalāh and that a man should cover his mouth (during Ṣalāh). [Abū Dāwūd no. 643]

Therefore, one should abstain from performing Ṣalāh with a mask.
