Divorce via Letter

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I lived with my husband only one month after marriage and then he left to another country for a job. Just after 8 months he sent me a letter and with three talaqs (divorce). Now I want to know how much iddah (waiting) period is for me in this case as I was not living with my husband since 8 months. Secondly can I continue my job as I’m a teacher?

A: a) Your iddat will be three haidh (menstrual periods) from the moment he issued talaaq.
b) If your ex husband fails to support you in your iddat and you have no other means to provide for yourself it will be correct to emerge from your home to sustain yourself only according to necessity.
