Is ghusl compulsory if one is uncertain whether the wetness is mani, mazi or wadi?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I want to know if I made the right decision, it’s about determining between Mazi, Mani and Wadi. I think this is the first or second time that something of this nature has happened and I am confused, so please help.

1. I don’t remember a dream, woke up during Fajr

2. Somewhere around 24 hours ago I did an obligatory ghusl (mentioning as it’s unlikely to be twice in a row?)

3. I think I checked or glanced at my undergarment to check if there was anything just in case, and I don’t remember seeing anything suspicious at that moment, but I may have missed it

4. Used the bathroom and was pouring water out of a jug onto my private area and it was erect and the water was dripping down from it

5. I think just before or around that time afterwards I noticed wetness on my undergarment, it was just like dampness and I don’t recall any whiteness and it wasn’t that big of a patch like to explain I think it was like four 50p (UK currency) coins stuck together, about that size

6. Before this I didn’t feel or notice anything come out

7. Don’t remember stickiness

After thinking about it, I knew the time for Fajr was decreasing and using my own reasoning I determind that it was most probably not a wet dream and so I put on a different set of clothes and prayed.

I also put that undergarment with the dampness on my radiator to dry and I notice there is not a crusty patch, but you can see that there is the outline of where the wetness was.

So my reasoning is that it is very most likely not a wet dream, and it is most probably mazi and I don’t think it was the water that I used because I don’t think the water would leave an outline on my undergarment, (it wouldn’t show an outline when it had dried?) and I don’t think it is Wadi because I notice no thick whiteness or any crust on the undergarment which I presume would be there?

So in summary, I made the reasoning that it is mazi and doesn’t require wajib ghusl, can you reassure me that my reasoning was correct?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Your conclusion that the wetness was Mazi is correct and ghusl was not required.[1]
