Assalamualikum mufti sahab. 1) What is the longest period of time permitted by Shariat, in today’s world, for a husband to depart from his wife, and go abroad for worldly/religious reason? Please give support with authentic ahadith(s). 2) Can the wife intiate divorce process after the above period has expired? 3) Is the son-in-law mahram to his mother-in-law? 4) Is it allowed to recite Qur’an/do zikr in the hour before salatul zohar? 5) Would it be acceptable to call Abdur-Rehman, Abdur-Rehmani?

Answer

1. Q: How long can a married person stay away from his wife?
A: A married person may stay away from his wife for whatever period that was mutually agreed upon. However, if the wife is not happy regarding the husband staying away, then the husband should meet his wife at least once every four months. (Fataawa Nizamiya vol. 1 pg. 250)

2. The wife may apply to a Muslim judicial committee comprising of Ulama for an annulment of her marriage. The judicial committee will adhere to the Shari?ah laws of Faskh (annulment of marriage).

3. The son-in-law is a Mahram to his mother-in-law.

4. Abdul-Rahmani is incorrect.
