Qada’ for Missing Fasts Intentionally

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Salam,

I have a question to ask. during Ramadan this year i have missed atleast 5 or more fasts on purpose as this was the first time i was fasting in UK where the no of hours for fasting were very long and i had some academic related work that needed some concentration. After doing some research i have now found out that this is a sin to leave out fasts on purpose. Can you kindly let me know how i can make up fr these fasts and what should i do ? Kindly i need your guidance on this Please note i dont remember the exact no of days i did not fast

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We are pleased to hear that you realize your sin of intentionally missing fasts and commend you on your effort to make up for them. We ask Allah to grant you steadfastness.

The way to make up for the missed fasts is simple. You should do tawba and istighfar, repent sincerely and ask Allah to forgive you, then estimate how many days you missed and fast one day for each day you missed until you are certain that all the fasts have been made up.[1]

If you kept a fast and then broke it without a valid reason in shari‘a, then in that case, you must keep 60 fasts consecutively as a penalty (kaffara). This is apart from the one qada fast for each day missed.

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best.
