Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The Ruling for Men to Dye their Hair

Imam `Ala’ al-Din al-Haskafi states in his Durr al-Mukhtar (5: 271)

“It is recommended for men to dye their hair and beard (1), even outside war according to the sounder opinion. The sounder opinion is that the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) did not do it (2). It is disliked with black (3), though some said it is not — from Majma` al-Fatawa, taken from al-Minah by the author [of the basic text, Tanwir al-Absar, Imam Tumurtashi].”

Imam Muhammad Amin Ibn `Abidin comments in his Radd al-Muhtar (known as al-Hashiya, or, in the Subcontinent, as “al-Shami”):

(1) “TO DYE THEIR HAIR AND BEARD” Not their hands or feet, for it is disliked (makruh) because it is imitating women.

(2) “THE PROPHET (BLESSINGS AND PEACE BE UPON HIM) DID NOT DO IT” Because he passed away when he had only 20 grey hairs on his head and beard, or 17 as in Bukhari and our sources…

(3) “IT IS DISLIKED WITH BLACK” That is, in other than war…

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam,

Faraz.
