Isn’t the benefit in reading the Qur’an greater than the harm in touching it without wudu?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

If I cannot touch the Koran without wudu then I would rarely be able to touch it. I break wind frequently (I call it “breaking wudu” now) and I can only rely on the intention to be in a state of wudu, that is, perform wudu and regardless of what happens immediately afterwards, hold the intention. I also enjoy reading the Koran on public transit, as my long commute is a chance during my busy day for reflection.  All of a sudden this is not available to me…

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Simple: why not listen to it on a walkman or mp3 player? There is tremendous reward in listening to the Qur’an, and it does not require being in a state of wudu.

Our worship is an expression of our slavehood to Allah, the basis of which is doing that which our Lord and Master has commanded, in the way that He has commanded.

(You may, however, qualify as someone with a chronic excuse: Search for ‘chronic excuse’ at www.sunnipath.com)

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
