My company let me borrow a laptop to work from home with. I accidentally stepped on it in the dark and damaged it (there’s a thick white line across the middle of it). Do I have to pay for it?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

According to the Hanafi scholars, an item that is lent to somebody is considered an amana (entrusted). Such an item if damaged unintentionally (i.e. without negligence or transgression) is not guaranteed and one is not liable to pay for it. [Majallat al-Ahkam al-`Adliyya]
