Everyday Duff Listening

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Karim Yahya, SunniPath Academy Teacher

My question is regarding listening to the duff on a cd in your car, All the books of fiqh say that it must be at a wedding or the similar, would it be permissible to listen to it at your work, car or your home even though it is not a wedding or eid day.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In The Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Praise is only for Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our liegelord Muhammad as well as his folk and companions.

The relied upon position of the Shafi’i School is that it is permissible to play and listen to a tambourine [(duff) with or without cymbals] and other drums excluding the Kuba.[1]

Commenting on the Kuba Shaykh Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (Allah have mercy on him) said in Tuhfa: “The indication of his speech [Nawawi’s] is the permissibility of drums other than it [the Kuba]; and this is the case.”

Shaykh Abdul-Hamid al-Sharwani understood from this that the duff’s permissibility was not limited to happy occasions.[2]

And Allah knows best and He alone gives success (tawfiq).

[1] Imam Nawawi (Allah be pleased with him) said in Minhaj; “It is a long drum with a narrow middle.” See: Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, Hawashi al-Sharwani Wa Ibn Qasim al-Abbadi ‘Ala Tuhfah al-Muhtaj Bisharh al-Minhaj (Beirut, Dar Ihya’ al-Turath al-‘Arabi), 10:221.
