Broken Compass

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

I recently learned that I wasn’t facing the qiblah during prayer because my compass was broken. The direction I was facing was almost directly opposite to the qiblah. Do I have to repeat all prayers offered in this direction?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الحمد لله رب العالمين و صلى الله على سيدنا محمد و على آله و صحبه و سلم أما بعد

Yes, it is obligatory for you to repeat every prayer offered to a direction other than the qiblah in the case you described, this being [m: where prayers were offered] directly opposite to the qiblah, since such mistakes aren’t excusable in our school.
