I have doubts about God

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Hamza Karamali, SunniPath Academy Teacher

Just some time ago doubts about the existence of one GOD kept on coming to my mind. Satan is making me feel there are many gods just like the ancient Greeks believed. This problem has increased up to the extent that I am beginning to feel uncomfortable…

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Allah tells us in Surat al-Anbiya’ [21:22], “Had there been therein gods besides Allah, [the heavens and the earth] would have been disordered.” The pantheon of the ancient Greeks consisted of weak immortals with imperfect power and will who were ever arguing with one another. This universe is not the haphazard handiwork of a band of arguing gods; it is the organized, intricately planned creation of the single God. This is obvious to anyone who spends a moment reflecting on the harmony and perfection of Allah’s creation.

Rational justifications of faith such as these are important aspects of our religion: there is nothing in Islam that goes against sound reason. Intellectual proofs are to our soul what medicine is to the body: the illness of doubt that assails the mind must be treated with the medicine of clear, rational explanations.

One should remember, however, that “prevention is the best cure.” Someone who has a healthy diet will seldom fall ill, and will have a stronger constitution that someone who eats poorly and relies on medicines to get by. Doubts that enter the mind are often the result of a poor spiritual constitution that stems from spiritual malnutrition. The proper way to treat such doubts is to use the medicines of intellectual proofs and then nourish the spirit with its real food, namely, acts of obedience to Allah, particularly the remembrance of Allah.

And Allah knows best.

Hamza.
