I made wudu and applied lipstick

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

If a woman has made wudu and later applies lipstick or other facial makeup in the house, can she pray with it?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

It is valid to pray with lipstick or other make-up on, if one has applied it after having made wudu, because water would have reached the skin and lips.

However, one must be careful that the lipstick does not contain any filth, such as alcohol or the filth of an unslaughtered animal. If it does, one would be carrying filth and this invalidates the prayer.

Many lipsticks in the West do contain whale fat, which is permissible, but others contain filthy substances. One should call the company that produces it to find out.
