What does it mean by: one shouldn’t exceed in cleanliness and supplications or cross boundaries of Du’aa?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Ref. to your response to Q11222. Please provide some examples to explain the above Ahadith.

Answer

Not to traverse the boundaries in cleanliness will mean;

1. Not to use more water than necessary

2. Not to be niggardly in the use of water

3. To act upon the evil insinuations of Shaytaan. By continuing to use water, thinking of oneself not being clean, whereas thrice is sufficient.

The above have been clearly borne out in a Hadith where Nabi [Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] has forbidden the using of more water than necessary, even though one may be making Wudhu on the banks of a river or the shore of the sea.

Not to traverse the boundaries of Du’aa will mean:

1. Not to fulfil the etiquettes of Du’aa

2. To ask for something impossible, e.g. to be made Nabi, etc.

3. To ask for something specific. In a Hadith we had sent to you in Q11222, Abdullah ibn Mughaffal is stopping his son from asking for a while palace in the right side of Jannah. In order to prevent him and other in the future asking for such specific things which could be considered exceeding the boundaries of Du’aa.
