What is the ruling of Sharia on men getting tattoos?

Answer:
Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

Temporary or removable tattooing in which different dyes are applied to the skin take the same ruling as henna. However, tattooing in which the skin is pricked by a needle causing severe pain and allowing impurities to settle under the skin is prohibited for both men and women.

However, it is permissible for a woman to get a temporary tattoo under the condition that the applied dyes are pure and the tattoo itself is visible only to husband and Mahrams. According to the Shafie, Hanafi and Maliki schools of thought, it is prohibited for men to get this kind of tattoo.

An-Nawawi said, "Based on several famous Hadiths, it is recommended for the married woman to dye her hands and feet with henna, but this is prohibited for men save as medication. This prohibition is indicated by the authentic Hadith in which the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Allah cursed men who imitate women."{Bukhari}.

In conclusion, it is prohibited for men to get tattoos. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
