Question

After praying fard salat in the masjid, people usually switch to another place for their sunna prayers. Why do we do this? Also, if several sunna prayers are made (e.g. 4 rakats followed by 2 rakats after the Jumma prayers) should we switch position after each sunna prayer?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

It is considered desirable to move to another place for your sunnah and nafl from the place you prayed your fardh salah.

There are two reasons for its desirability.

  1. A latecomer does not become confused about whether the congregation has finished or not.
  2. The more places you pray your salah on, the more witnesses one will have from the Earth who will testify to Allah on the Day of Judgement. (Durre Mandhuud p.377 v.2)

The conclusion to your question is that if it is possible it is good and desirable to pray your sunnah and nafl salah in different places to get more testimonies in the Hereafter.
