السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

There are various Ahadeeth that mention the virtues of the 15th night of Sha’baan, famously known as Laylat-ul-Baraa’ah. However, the vast majority of these narrations have some weakness in them. Due to the sheer number of narrations that are present, these Ahadeeth supplement each other in establishing the authentic virtue of this night.

It is narrated from Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr Radhiyallahu Anhu that Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam said:

“Allah looks with special attention towards His creation on the fifteenth night of Sha’baan and forgives all his servants except two categories of people; the person who harbours enmity and a murderer.”

Hadhrat Mu’aadh ibn Jabal Radhiyallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam said:

‘Allah Ta’ala turns to his entire creation on the fifteenth night of Sha’baan and forgives all of them except one who ascribes partners to Him and one who harbors enmity in his heart.’

The virtue established from these Ahaadeeth is that from the very beginning of the night Allah turns with special mercy and attention towards the creation and forgives those who repent and seek forgiveness.

THE SPECIAL VIRTUE OF THE NIGHT OF BARAA’AH:

The special virtues of the night of Baraa’ah are:

  1. Contrary to other nights wherein the last third of the night has special blessings and Allah descends to the lowest Heaven during this section of the night, on the night of Baraa’ah the special rain of the mercy and forgiveness of Allah begins to shower down right from the beginning of the night and continues right up till dawn.
  2. The sins of countless of people are pardoned. Furthermore, the number of pronouncements seeking out those who want forgiveness far supersede those which occur on other nights.

Every Muslim should therefore value this night. Turn towards Allah with sincere regret and shame over sins committed and make a promise never to return to sin again and seek forgiveness from Allah. Seek forgiveness for oneself and the rest of the Muslims, living and deceased. Have the firm hope and resolution in the hart that Allah will surely show mercy and forgiveness.

UNFORTUNATE PEOPLE:

It is understood from the Ahadeeth that even on this night, the following servants of Allah are deprived of His forgiveness:

  1. Idolaters
  2. Those who harbour enmity against others
  3. Consumers of alcohol
  4. Those who disobey their parents
  5. Those who wear their trousers, kurtas, lungis, etc. below their ankles;
  6. Those who commit adultery and murderers
  7. Those who sever family ties.

FASTING ON THE FIFTEENTH OF SHA’BAAN:

It is not Sunnah to fast specifically on the fifteenth of Shabaan. There is no reliable Hadith to prove that fasting on this day holds any virtue. One may fast on the fifteenth together with other fasts of Sha’baan. [i]

IBAA’DAH TO BE MADE:

There is no specific type of Ibaadah prescribed for the 15th night of Sha’baan.

In addition to du’a and istighfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah Ta’ala), on this night one should engage in any act of worship that one feels comfortable with. Optional Salah may also be observed.

Ibn Umar (Radiyallahu’anhu) narrates that Dua is not rejected on five nights:

The night of Jumuah, the first night of Rajab, 15th night of Shabaan, and the nights preceding the two Eids.
