Question:
What is the ruling of severing the neck of an animal during slaughter and will it be halal in such a scenario?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is severely disliked to slaughter an animal to the extent that the neck is broken regardless of when it dies[1].
In principle, an animal can only be halāl for consumption if the animal had life at the time when the slaughter was executed.[2]
If the animal dies as a result of the necessary vessels being cut, then the animal will be lawful for consumption regardless if the neck was broken or not[3]. However, breaking the neck will still be disliked. If the animal died due to the breaking of the neck, for example, the neck was struck from the back, in such a scenario, the animal will be unlawful for consumption.[4]
