Composure of a Sahabiyyah at the time of calamity

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Please comment on the authenticity of this narration:

The son of Ummu Khallad (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) was martyred. When she heard about it she came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) to enquire about his position and reward. Despite being afflicted by the great tragedy of losing her son, her face was still covered with a niqab (veil/purdah).

A Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was quite astonished by this [level of composure] and he remarked: “You have come to enquire about your son [who was martyred] yet you [are so composed that you] have still covered your face [in this tragic moment]?”

She replied: “I may have lost my son, but I have not lost my modesty.”

Answer

This narration is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 2480, Musnad Abi Ya’la and others with a weak chain.

However, the lesson of modesty and composure during calamity may still be derived therefrom, despite the weak chain.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
