The first thing a person will be questioned about on the Day of Qiyamah and the importance of optional deeds

Question

Please provide the full Hadith:

“The first thing a person will be questioned about from his actions will be Salah. If his Salah is in order then he has certainly succeeded. If however, it is not in order then he is unsuccessful and has incurred a loss.”

Answer

The full Hadith is as follows:

Hurayth ibn Qabisah (rahimahullah) relates: “I came to Madinah and said, ‘O Allah! facilitate a pious companion for me [to sit in his company].’ He says, ‘I sat by Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and told him, I asked Allah to grant me a pious companion so narrate a Hadith to me that you heard from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), perhaps Allah will allow me to benefit from it.’ He said, I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, ‘The first thing a person will be questioned about from his actions [deeds which deal with huququllah- rights of Allah Ta’ala] will be Salah. If his Salah is in order then he has certainly succeeded. If however, it is not in order then he is unsuccessful and has incurred a loss. If there is some deficiency in his obligatory deeds, Allah Ta’ala will say, ‘Look, does My servant have any optional deeds?’ The deficiencies of the obligatory deeds will then be completed from the optional deeds and the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in this manner.’”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 413, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 860 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1425)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith sound (hasan).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
