Protection of the gaze and private parts ensures safety against humiliation and disgrace

Question

Is the following narration authentic?

لتغضن أبصاركم، ولتحفظن فروجكم، ولتقيمن وجوهكم أو لتكسفن وجوهكم

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 7840)

The chain of narrators is weak. However, the Hadith is suitable to quote as a warning/caution as is the case with Hadiths of this nature.

(Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 3 pg. 9 and pg. 171, numbers: 5090 and 5662, Also see: Targhib, vol. 3 pg. 37 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 8 pg. 63)

Translation

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “You should certainly lower your gaze, protect your private part and put [yourselves] in order, lest you [be disgraced].”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
