Question on permissibility of abortion.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa-TT.com
Question:

I need assistance regarding abortion. 6 months ago I was pregnant, it was an ordeal for was in bed for 9 weeks of pregnancy. I had pain due to my IBS sickness, had no vomiting thou. However I had to abort due to the doctor finding out I was having a conjoined twins and the pregnancy will risk the babies and my life. After that ordeal my husband and I decided to wait a while since it was emotionally and physically damaging experience for me.

Now, we were shock to find out we were pregnant 2 weeks ago. The reason we suspected was because I was in pain, thinking maybe that time of the month is coming but didn’t. Now coming 7 weeks, my ibs has flared up so bad, vomiting and  diarrhea an average of 5 times a day everyday. My womb extremely sore and stomach in pain, can’t eat, get out of bed and going through major depression due to the pain and at times cannot lift up my head due to the throbbing migraine. I have been self medicating by doing research what can ease the pain due to IBS. But the question is I know I cannot be taking meds for 9 mths even though it might be safe but the fear is  overwhelming as it may cause complications on the baby.

I’m really at lost because I feel the best thing now is abortion because I feel I’m not only putting my life in danger but as well as the baby (I don’t know if it’s the right thing to do) and at the same time I don’t know if I can go through it again because it’s just been 6 months from that bad ordeal when I lost my twins. I need advice.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We make dua Allah grant you courage in your present situation and grant you Shifa. Ameen.

As a believer, you should have the belief and faith that every condition is from Allah and no pain is in vain. It is trough that, Allah forgives sins and elevates a person’s status. Be courageous and patient.

In principle, one may abort for a genuine medical reason before 120 days of pregnancy.

Our advice is you consult with your gynecologist and if he/she is certain that this pregnancy will seriously impact on your health, or endanger your life, then you may abort if you are within 120 days of pregnancy[1]. As a matter of precaution, we advise you seek another medical opinion on your issue.

Also make lots of Dua and ask Allah Ta’ala to guide you on whatever is best for you.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
