Do clothes become clean after dry cleaning?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa-TT.com

Question

Do clothes become clean after dry cleaning?

Answer

The dry cleaning process is basically three stages; (1) washing the fabric in solvent, (2) spinning to extract excess solvent, and (3) drying by tumbling in a hot air stream. The reason why it is called “dry-cleaning” is because the solvent used in the cleaning process is not water. Many types of fabric do not handle the water very well and also there many types of stains in which water is not particularly good at removing. The solvent which is used almost universally in the dry-cleaning industry is called “Perchloroethylene”. Perchloroethylene is a colourless, non-flammable liquid with a sweet, ether-like smell. This liquid is ritually pure.

Thus if a person dry cleans his impure clothes, it will be ritually clean after the process of dry cleaning.

The Jurists have stated that physical visible impurities may be removed by any pure liquid which has the potential of removing traces of impurities from the affected area.

If a piece of impure garment is placed into a bucket of pure water or liquid, the entire bucket will become impure the moment the garments goes into it. If the garment is washed using that contaminated water, the Jurists have stated that the garment will be ritually pure if there are no signs of impurities present in the garment (in the case of visible impurities) and if one is satisfied that the garment has become clean (in the case of invisible impurities). [1]

In the process of dry-cleaning, impurities are totally removed to the extent that no traces remain, even those impurities which its stains are difficult to remove. Secondly the solvent (which becomes impure) does not remain on the garments thus there is no reason why the clothes will not become pure. There is however, a minute dry residue of ‘Perchloroethylene’ (the solvent used in dry-cleaning) that may remain in the garments. This can be liken to the smoke of something impure or its dust which gathers and settles, which the Jurists regards as ritually pure.[2]

In conclusion, clothes that are placed in the dry cleaners will come out ritually clean as all impurities are removed, there is also satisfaction that ritual purity has been attained and lastly, none of the impure solvent remains on the garment.
