Using wife’s mahr money to pay off a debt

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I gave my wife R5000 cash mehar money. When I got married I did not have any debt. Now I have a R45 000 debt to pay. My wife keeps telling me to use the mehar money to pay part of the debt. Is this permissible in Islam?

Bismillaah

A: If she is happy to assist you with her wealth, then it is permissible.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
