My query is with regard to Fatwa#: 12928 The query was in relation to the shaping of the beard. The respected scholar mentioned that the jawline is the yardstick for how low one may shape the beard…. Would it be possible to provide reference from the hanafi mazhab for this? A salafi person told me that there is mo such book which explains this. Please assist.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Hanafi scholars have clearly stated that the beard is what grows on the jawbone (i.e. the bone that holds the lower teeth, known as the ‘mandible’).
‘Allāmah Hasan al-Shurunbulālī (994 – 1069 H), the great Egyptian Hanafī jurist, writes:
واللحي منبت اللحية فوق عظم الأسنان
“The jawbone (lahy) is the area of growth of the beard (lihyah), on top of the bone [holding] the [lower] teeth.”[1]
