Here are some questions regarding a woman in her iddat (the mourning waiting period for a widowed woman). Can she wear colored clothes? use hair oil? wear ear rings to keep the piercing open? step outside her home out of necessity? receive guests? use the phone and Internet?

A non-Muslim young boy started working for a Muslim family as domestic servant.  Later he decided to accept Islam and take Shahada. As they live in a remote town where no male was available, the lady of the house administered the Shahada. She is helping him memorize the verses and whenever he offers salat, she helps him. Under the circumstances, has she done the right thing?

I am currently in the second year of my law degree and would be most grateful if you could clarify the following points, insha Allah. 1. Is it permissible to practice any other law (e. English Legal System) which is contrary to Shariah Law? 2. If it is not permissible, what is the position regarding doing legal work to help the Ummah e.g working for an organization like the Islamic Human Rights Commission (www.ihrc.org.uk)? 3. Is campaigning for Muslims illegally imprisoned permissible? Does it go against our belief that Allah Most High is The Knower of all things therefore there is wisdom in all things that He does? 4. I have thought about teaching law. Would this be permissible? I would be most grateful if you could possibly suggest the best use I can make of my law degree to please Allah and help the Ummah. Also please take into account that I am female and would need some work which would permit observing the rules of hijab.

I have a question concerning hijab when leaving the home in hostile places. I reside in the US, and where I live is a place ( US State) where there are a lot of fundamentalist Christians that hate Islam and Muslims. Most of the time, I have to go out alone because of the type of work my husband does, and I don’t have any Muslim relatives. I have been wrapping my scarf or wearing a hat and dressing modestly. I cover everything except my ears, face, and hands. I dress in a way that doesn’t traditionally point out the fact that I am Muslim. I don’t know if this is ok under my circumstances. I need some insight on this matter. Also, I cover this way with my husband. There are radical groups here that are capable of hurting whole families. We are unable to relocate, even if we move a couple states away we have the same problem. This section of the US, where we live, is known as very racist and the major states in which fundamentalist Christians reside. Moving further North or out West is economically impossible for us.
