How to practice purdah of voice?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

How should I decline to speak with na mahrams who approach me and ask me questions or say something to me? A lot of strangers from outside and my namahram cousins come up to me and ask me things and I know that women are supposed to purdah of their voices, but I don’t know how I’m supposed to let the person know that I can’t speak with them. If I don’t reply to what they say, they feel offended and think that I am being rude. (U.S.A)

If they considered it to be rude there is nothing wrong with that and let them think that way. You should do what is necessary for you in the light of the Shariah and whatever is not allowed for you; you should just stay quiet about.
