Worship of Prophet in the Cave of Hiraa before wahee

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
Before Islam, what was the criteria for the Arabs to be to be monotheist? How did they worship Allah (swt) upto the point the Wahee started or upto the point when the instructions for Salaat came down? How did Prophet Muhammad (saws) worship Allah (swt) in the Cave of Hiraa?
Before the revelation came down the only thing we know about the prophet peace be upon him is that he used to worship. There are no detail accounts of how he used to worship. Some people have suggested that the prophet peace be upon him used to do a lot of contemplation. Hence, it is suggested by many scholars that contemplation is also a form of worship.

It is also likely that from the tradition of profit Abraham and Ishmael those things, which could be validated as authentic were practiced by the prophet peace be upon him, because a lot of the points of the tradition were mixed up with unauthentic customs.

Then there is a distinction between just worshiping and realizing the rights of ethics and the ethics of belief system. One has to know what is right and wrong and these things were predetermined. Everybody in the world knows that all the religions teach etiquette’s and good mannerism. This is the reason why the prophet peace be upon him started his mission with the teachings of ethics. He taught people to be hospitable, to be generous, to be helpful, to treat them well, to fulfill the needs of those who were impoverished. He also taught people to perform pilgrimage and all these things were prevalent, even before the prophet’s time. Therefore, we know that there where many traditions that were adulterated and only those, which were in their pure form, were adopted. And there is no detail explanation of those forms.
