What is the basis of any relation?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

What is the basis of any relationship, we are all from the children of Adam (AS) and Hawwa, in which case we are all brothers and sisters. Does this means that my father is my brother and my mother my sister. Sometimes even though I meet a person for the first time why is there a feeling that I know the person. In the same context, you like or dislike a person even though you don’t know him.

From the aspect of being the children of Adam (Alayhis Salaam) we are all definitely brothers and sisters; but then due to the difference in relations between the individuals involved there is also a difference in ruling. That’s the reason why these types of relations of being the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve do not affect the relationship of a child to his father or mother or children amongst themselves. There is no discrepancy; we can be children and fathers and grandfathers and grandchildren at the same time. But there are different rulings based on the different relationships that are established. That’s why as the relations increased intensity in closeness, similarly the rulings also change. Thus, we will not have relations of a sister with our mothers or the relations of a brother with our fathers, because of their distinct individual features.
