Is it considered a sin for a Muslim to work out and focus on improving their physical appearance?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. i’m hoping this reaches you in the best of health and iman.

My questions is regarding working out. Is it suitable for a muslim to workout and focus on the improvement of his physical appearance, or is that a worthless deed that keeps him away from the rememberance of Allah azza wajal?

JazakAllah khairan.

Exercise is usually a waste of time and a involves violation of the rules of shari’ah. Obviously, this should be avoided. Instead, it is better to keep oneself busy in remembrance of Allah than to waste time in that kind of nonsense.

But if physical exercise is done for the intention of:

a. Strengthening oneself for worship.

b. To become strong enough to defend against oppression and sedition, from the Shariah point of view.,

then the physical exercise becomes a recommended activity, but with the following conditions: But the attire in the gym or fitness center must be modest according to the rules of shari’ah:

i. The workout gear in the gym or fitness center must comply with shari’ah constraints, which demand covering the area of the body mandated to conceal in front of strangers.

ii. Music should be avoided.

iii. Avoid resemblance to non-Muslims.

iv. There should be no mixing of males and females.
