When I Pray Late, What Rules Relate to Al-Fatiha and Sajda Al-Sahw?

Question

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu.

While praying Fajr, I was running out of time. I thought I made a mistake by reciting a large portion of Fatiha.

When I was doing sajda e sahw, after doing salam as I was going into sajda, I accidentally said the second salam. Then I went into sajda for sajda e sahw and completed my prayer as usual. Is my salah valid?

Jazaakallahu khair.

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

Assalam’aleykum,

Yes, your prayer was valid.

Indeed it would be permitted to leave parts of the necessary (wajib) recitation if one genuinely feared the exiting of Fajr time. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

It is obligatory (fard) to complete the prayer within the time. Therefore, one would leave as many necessary (wajib) actions as needed to fulfill one’s obligation of completing the prayer on time.

It would, however, be recommended to repeat this prayer.

Allah Most High says: “Surely, the prayer is an obligation on the believers that is tied up with time.” (Qur’an, 4:103)

The prostrations of forgetfulness

You didn’t need to perform the prostrations of forgetfulness because you have left the necessary actions of the prayer willingly. The prostrations of forgetfulness are only required when necessary actions of the prayer are left out of forgetfulness. [Nur al-Idah]

In your case, what you needed to do was to repeat this prayer with all its necessary actions, not before 15 minutes after sunrise.

Performing the prostrations of forgetfulness after two salams is also a strong position in the Hanafi school. Nonetheless, performing them after one salam is more cautionary as it is the strongest position. In any case performing the prostrations of forgetfulness after two salams would only invalidate the prostrations of forgetfulness, not the prayer that preceded them. [Maraqi al-Falah]

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam
