Repeating prayer if one prayed with a garment on shoulders, or didn’t remain motionless in prayer

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Assalam Alaikum,

I have two questions regarding prayer.

The first question is regarding an excerpt from the book “Absolute Essentials of Islam” by F. Rabbani. On page 26 under “actions disliked in prayer are:”, it states that “4. praying in a garment one places on one’s shoulder without entering teh hands in its sleeves.” I wear a prayer garment, with a khimar that reaches down to my knees such as this one http://www.alhediya.com/praythobwom.html . It covers my hands completely. Is praying in this garment makrooh?

My second question has do to with past prayers. I’m a convert to Islam, and was basically misguided by some ignorant ‘would-be scholars’. Therefore, I’m trying to makeup all those prayers I did wrong. What I want to know is:
a) for those prayers that I only recited surah fatihah on the fard salat in all rakats, does this require makeups?
b) for those prayers in which I did not remain motionless briefly during sajdah, ruku, and standing after ruku, does this require makeups?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

1. No, the mentioned garment wouldn’t be disliked to wear–as that is a ‘normal wearing’ for such an item of clothing, and it doesn’t result in excessive motion or distraction. [`Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Alai’yya]

2. If you only recited the Fatiha in your obligatory prayers, you left a necessary (wajib) action–namely, adding at least three short verses in two rakats of obligatory prayers. [ibid.]

Leaving a necessary action doesn’t invalidate prayer but it does render the action deficient. When it comes to current or recent performance, such prayers are necessary (wajib) to repeat, in order to mend this deficiency. [ibid.]

However, it isn’t necessary to repeat numerous past prayers in which a necessary action was omitted. [Shurunbulali, Imdad al-Fattah. Note that Ibn Abidin chose a more precautious opinion, but leading Hanafi fuqaha deem his position very difficult to follow and give fatwa on the mentioned opinion]

The same principles apply to not remaining motionless in bowing and prostration–as doing so is also a necessary (wajib) action. [op cit.]

It should be remembered that prayers in which an obligatory action–such as a condition or integral–were omitted are obligatory to make up, by clear texts of the Qur’an and Sunna.
