Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

When someone has passed away, are we allowed to make a Oumra or Hajj for them? What is permitted to be done for living Muslims or for those who have died?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is permitted to donate the reward of any action that one performs to another person, living or dead (without losing reward), according to mainstream Sunni scholarship. See attached answers for details.

As for performing Hajj on behalf of someone who had failed to perform it, this has conditions discussed by Mufti Taqi Usmani in the following article:

Hajj al-Badal – Perfoming Hajj on Behalf of Another.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
