Giving Salams in the Bathroom

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Ilyas Patel

I was asked a question a few months back if it is Haram to give the greetings As Salaamu Alaikum to someone while in the bathroom. I know it is not appropriate to mention Allah’s name or any words with Allah’s name in the bathroom but does the same apply to giving someone the greetings?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

It is mentioned in Nur al-Idah as follows:

‘One should not speak in the toilet except if necessary, because Allah detests it. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, no two men go out to answer the call of nature, whilst exposing their private parts and talking, except Allah detests it.

(Allama Hasan Shurunbulali, Imdad al-Fattah, pg 57)

Also it is mentioned in Umdat al-Fiqh as follows:

One should not do the remembrance of Allah with one’s tongue, but only in ones mind) one should also not reply to anyone’s sneeze, salam (greeting) or the words of Adhan…

(Allama Zuwwar Husain Shah, Umdat al-Fiqh V.1 pg 271)
